No actually it is not at all necessary to include any theme. You can have a simple mitzvah. But if you want to skip out the theme part just because it is more expensive, or more demanding, then you are wrong. Themes can be really easy, and as a matter of fact, almost all themes can be equally easy- ifff you know how to plan them. But since you have asked, I guess a hobby theme would be an easy one. You can create a theme around your son’s favorite hobby. That could be watching movies or… idk… sports. Whatever he likes, use that thing and create a theme out of that. Let’s say he likes a particular TV show. Create your theme around that one. Kids are mostly crazy about some celebrity. Create a theme around that particular celebrity. About theme ideas- you can search more on this forum, there are a number of theme related ideas here.

And then again, you don’t really have to have a theme. Even if you want to do a traditional classic Mitzvah, it’s all good. The main thing is- everyone should have fun… enjoy!
