Hi,
I’m planning my son’s Bar Mitzvah next year. He is 12. All of us are really looking forward to it. I visited your website and found many useful tips. After reading through a lot of your articles, I’m all pumped up and excited about the event. But, I have a problem… we have been a bit careless in his Jewish education. Is there any way by which he can get fast, last-minute type Bar Mitzvah. I mean, he does have 1 year for that, but I don’t want to pressurize him too much with his studies going on. What should I do?

Hmmm…. There are many areas to discuss here. The very first thing… there is no “Bar Mitzvah” as such, apart from when the boy becomes 13, when he becomes subject of commandments.
Second thing, Bar/Bat Mitzvah is used as an incentive for families so that their children can be educated. You can get him a tutorial, but they will only teach him shortcuts without getting him to connect to his roots. A tutorial will cost you minimum 25-75 dollars per hour. Also, it cannot reach up to the standards of education given by the family since beginning. Of course you can have a party of him becoming a Jewish adult, but once the incentive of the party is gone, I doubt he will want to learn more about his heritage.

I agree with Tottie. You can hold the Mitzvah still, but you need to take care that your son stays in touch with his roots
