Hello, I am a stay at home mother of two boys. I need some help regarding the preparations that need to be done when it comes to my son’s Bar Mitzvah. What is the most appropriate theme to have for this kind of occasion? I know that this is supposed to be a celebration of the coming of age of a child, so as much as possible, I would like to stay neutral between themes.
I would not like it to be much of a spectacle but I would also like to be well prepared and give the proper mood for the event. Any advice would help.
My son also has a lot of friends so should I invite all of them? Anything is much appreciated.
Thanks again and have a nice day.

Hello there,
I would suggest that since it would be your son’s party, wouldn’t it be more enjoyable for him to be included in the planning? You can ask him what he wants to have in the party- from the theme to the food. This way, it would be easier for you to plan out what you need to do and who you need to contact for your party needs.
This will also help your son learn to be more responsible. Giving him the ability to have an opinion or to even prepare for his own party himself will make him feel grown up and of age which is what Bar Mitzvah is all about. It will give him his first taste of real life responsibility.
It will also be an opportunity for you to bond with your son. Make it a family affair. This way, your son will learn to appreciate the occasion even more and realize the true significance of being a Jewish man.

Help your son realize how important the day is for him and for your family as well. Take this opportunity to tell him about the history of the Jewish faith and how it would affect his life’s journey for many years to come.
I hope you and your son enjoy the preparations and the Bar Mitzvah. Have a nice day!
Respectfully,

I definitely know how you feel. Being a stay at home mom myself, I get all my party solutions from magazines or online. But I will try to help you as much as I can.

Actually, I got to plan my son’s bar mitzvah a few years ago and I found that there are many possible themes. I would suggest you to go through this very same blog (doctor simcha) and look at some party ideas. Some themes are really cool, but you don’t have to follow them all blindly. For example, if you cannot afford a certain type of decoration, improvise. That’s what I do. Pick any theme from this blog, and wherever things don’t fit, improvise. If you can’t afford big cut outs of Hollywood celebrities, just get some cuttings from magazines, paste them on cardboards and decorate them. I hope you are getting my drift. Some ideas are too expensive, and there are many ways to save money by improvising.
